Clare Mann
Profile
Clare Mann is an Organisational Psychologist, and best-selling author of six books. She is also an existential psychotherapist with extensive international experience facilitating individuals and organisations to create extraordinary results.
Integrity and vision are bywords of Clare’s, both in business and personally. These qualities are the cornerstone of her business, Communicate 31.
Clare started her life in England, with her parents’ congruent and perhaps prophetic ambitions for her future. Her mother wanted her to become a good citizen, her father taught her that, on the whole, people are pretty decent; you just have to create the conditions under which they thrive and grow and then they’ll offer their best.
Vocationally, Clare’s roles have included Human Resources Manager and University academic. She developed open learning provisions internationally and chaired a team responsible for quality standards in Human Resource Management. She was Chief External Examiner on the BSc/Diploma in Health Services Management for the Royal College of Nursing in the UK.
Clare has practised as a psychologist for twenty years and for over ten years as a psychotherapist. She has been awarded fellowships to both the Australian Human Resources Institute and the British Psychological Society for her contribution to those professions.
Now resident in the Blue Mountains of NSW, Clare currently runs a number of public and in-house training programs in Sydney and elsewhere. These include a 16 month communications/leadership program entitled the Communicate Accountability System, which teaches individuals and leaders to be personally and professionally successful.
Clare’s focus is on people becoming the conscious leaders of their own lives. She firmly believes, “the quality of our relationships and life is directly related to the quality of our communication.” Whilst most developmental processes in communication focus on skills attainment, Clare works with the individual from an existential perspective to help them listen and communicate with themselves first. This, combined with skills training, enables the person to take responsibility for their life and find purpose.
In everyday terms, Clare describes her speciality as “bringing people together to truly get out of the way of themselves. There are so many personal development opportunities for people today, and so many of them in positive psychology which deal with the logical, rational level of change. I’m interested in permanent behaviour change and we can only do that if we change at the inner level. That’s where my psychology and psychotherapy training comes in. It’s to get people unstuck as quickly as possible – not to change their mood, but rather to change their behaviour.”
Describing Doug Wead as a mentor and a great influence, Clare comments “Doug was the presidential advisor in the White House for many years during which time he wrote many speeches for Presidents. He’s actually the historian who wrote ‘All the Presidents’ Children. Clare suggests “he’s a man who has walked with kings and yet he has a humble touch.”
Clare’s integrity to her values is summed up when she says, “A whole piece for me is around ethical leadership. I truly believe for us to be ethical, we have to do our best to offer something to the world of real value. We must also do that not at the expense of people, the environment or animals.”
Beyond her work which clearly sits inside this ethical leadership model, adherence to this has resulted in Clare being both an ethical vegan and a staunch defender of animal rights. Ethical veganism is the philosophy under which someone lives their life in the belief that all animals are equal. They do not engage in practices that use, exploit or be entertained by animals in any way. Clare is also a highly active and devoted member of Animals Australia.
